The Simple Weekly Routine That Keeps Our House Running

Real life around the house

I don’t have a perfect routine.

Most weeks still feel a little chaotic no matter what I do.

But over time, I’ve figured out a few simple things that help our house run a lot smoother — especially during busy seasons.

This isn’t a strict schedule or anything fancy.

It’s just what actually works for me as a working mom of 3 trying to stay on top of meals, laundry, and everything else life throws at us.

The Goal

I’m not trying to do everything perfectly.

I just want to:

  • stay a little ahead of the week

  • make dinners easier

  • and not feel like I’m constantly scrambling

🗓️ My Weekly Routine (What Actually Works for Us)

🛒 Meal Planning (Midweek) + Groceries (Saturday)

I actually plan ahead for the next week.

  • I meal plan on Wednesday or Thursday

  • I schedule grocery delivery for Saturday morning

This helps me go into the weekend with a plan instead of starting from scratch.

On the weekend, I:

  • cook bigger meals

  • prep lunches for the week

  • get ahead where I can

This is probably the biggest thing that makes the rest of the week easier.

🧺 Laundry (Weekend Reset)

I don’t try to squeeze laundry into busy weekdays.

Instead:

  • I do most of it on the weekend

  • I rotate loads throughout the day

  • I fold at night while watching TV with my husband

It’s not exciting — but it works and doesn’t feel overwhelming.

🍽️ Dinners (Planned + Prepped Ahead)

Because I plan midweek and shop on Saturday, dinners are already figured out.

During the week:

  • some meals are prepped the night before

  • some go straight into the crockpot in the morning

  • sometimes my husband throws something in the oven since he works from home

The goal is:
👉 no decision-making at 5 PM
👉 just execute what’s already planned

🌙 Night Reset (After Kids Go to Bed)

This is one of the biggest game changers for me.

After the kids go to bed, I:

  • do a workout

  • clean up the kitchen

  • unload/load the dishwasher

  • pick up the main areas

Nothing crazy — just enough so I don’t wake up already behind.

📅 Weekly Check-In (Built Into Prep Time)

I don’t sit down for a formal planning session — I just build it into what I’m already doing.

When I’m meal prepping for the week, I:

  • check the calendar for what’s coming up

  • look at the kids’ school lunch menu

My kids do:

  • 3 school lunches

  • 2 packed lunches

So on Sundays, I sit with them and:
👉 let them pick which days they want school lunch

That way I know exactly what I need to prep and when.

💬 What This Looks Like in Real Life

Some weeks, this all goes smoothly.

Other weeks… it doesn’t.

Things fall behind, plans change, and we end up throwing something together for dinner.

But having this as my baseline helps me reset quickly and not feel completely overwhelmed.

Closing

None of this is perfect.

But it’s real, it works, and it helps me get through the week without losing my mind.

If you’re in a busy season too — don’t overcomplicate it.

Start with a few simple systems that make your life easier.

That’s what actually sticks.
